Rendering - The Story of a Boy Who Went Forth to Learn Fear

A fascinating amalgam of classical and contemporary music, Berio's project “Rendering” inspired us to inquire into an analogous project in dance. The archetypal classical ballet is the choreographed narration of a fairytale, hence we set off to find our own, hitherto “un-ballet-ified” fairytale, which might prove suitable for slipping into Berio’s unique “musical suit”, and were delighted to come across The Brothers Grimm’s “The Story of a Boy Who Went Forth to Learn Fear”: the perfect plot for populating Berio’s creation with characters and stories who would flirt with the aesthetics and conventions of both classical ballet and contemporary dance.
