Michael Ende succinctly sums up a simple basic truth of our existence with sobering clarity: we must be able to share our time with those people who are particularly close to our hearts - otherwise our lifetime soon becomes devoid of meaning. For a lifetime in which it is only others who bestow attention and affection on us will be stale and dull.
